Ken Aoki 青木挙
Ken Aoki is a ceramic artist based in Shigaraki, Shiga Prefecture, where he continues his ceramic practice. Since studying ceramics in his youth, he has remained dedicated to creating functional everyday tableware, believing that simple, timeless forms allow pottery to become a natural part of daily dining and living.
His work preserves the distinctive texture and warmth of Shigaraki clay, featuring restrained forms and soft, understated glazes. Subtle variations created during the firing process give each piece a rich sense of depth and individuality. Rather than focusing on decorative elements, Aoki places greater importance on the relationship between the vessel, the food it holds, and the people who use it. He believes that a well-crafted piece of pottery develops its own character through time and use, enriching even the simplest meal with a sense of calm, comfort, and quiet beauty.
