Hirokazu Furutani 古谷浩一

  • Born in 1979 in Shigaraki, Köka City, Shiga Prefecture, Japan
  • Studied ceramics at:
    • Shigaraki Ceramic Research Institute, Glaze Course (completed 2003)
    • Kyoto Prefectural Pottery Technical College (graduated 2004)
  • Began working at Furutani Pottery(古谷製陶所)which was establish by his father Nobuo Furutani in 1970 soon after graduation


Today, Hirokazu leads the pottery studio alongside a small team, every artwork are entirely handmade, and overseeing all processes from clay shaping to final firing.


The studio specializes in kohiki-style ware: red-iron clay coated with a white slip glaze (粉引), creating soft, warm-toned tableware for everyday use. Pieces are designed to be warm, simple, and functional, reflecting natural materials and everyday comfort.
