Tenkiame 天氣雨

tenkiame is a Japanese glass artist whose work is guided by colour, light and the small moments of wonder found in everyday life. The artist cuts and arranges sheets of coloured glass, then fires them together so that the separate pieces melt into a single form. Through this process, transparent and coloured glass overlap like a collage, creating plates, spoons, jam knives and other objects for daily use.

The name "tenkiame" is the Japanese word for a sunshower— a moment when rain falls while the sun is still shining. Sunlight catches the raindrops and often makes people look up in search of a rainbow. The artist hopes to share the same feeling of surprise and delight through each piece of glass. Bright colours, transparent layers and slightly nostalgic combinations turn familiar tableware into a small, joyful landscape.

Beyond glassmaking, tenkiame is also committed to supporting children and medical education. Through Japan Heart, the artist helps provide tuition and living expenses for young medical scholarship students in Cambodia as a foster sponsor. The artist also donates through UNICEF to support children affected by crises around the world.

While recognizing that one person cannot help every life, tenkiame finds deep meaning in the possibility that a supported student may one day become a doctor and go on to help many others. This sense of hope, connection and quiet generosity is also reflected in work made to bring brightness into daily life.
